Learn more about Isania Otero-Ramos, Spanish teacher at Legacy – Phoenix: How long have you been a teacher? When did you begin teaching with Legacy? I am from Puerto Rico and I’ve been a teacher for 13 years. I began to teach at Legacy – Laveen in 2017 and then transferred to Legacy – Phoenix in 2018. Go Longhorns and Firebirds! ~~~ Soy de Puerto Rico y éste es mi año número 13 en el magisterio. Comencé a enseñar en Legacy Laveen en el 2017 y luego me transferí a Legacy Phoenix en el 2018. ¡Una porra para los Longhorns y los Firebirds! What do you love most about being able to help Legacy teachers and families? What I love the most about being able to help teachers is that we learn so much from each other and our different experiences and backgrounds. I love how we help each other to grow professionally. When I was new to Legacy, I had a few mentors that supported me and helped me to feel welcomed, confident and comfortable. Now, it feels good being able to do the same thing for other teachers. What I love the most about helping families is the bond that we have created over the years and the long lasting relationships we’ve established. ~~~ Lo más que disfruto de poder ayudar a otros maestros es que aprendemos mucho los unos de los otros, ya sea de nuestras experiencias o nuestra trascendencia. Amo cómo mutuamente nos apoyamos en nuestro crecimiento profesional. Cuando comencé en Legacy tuve varios mentores que me ayudaron a sentirme bienvenida, cómoda y segura. Hoy día se siente bien el poder hacer lo mismo por otros maestros.
Lo más que disfruto de ayudar a las familias es el lazo de unión que hemos creado a través de los años; una relación bonita y duradera que hemos establecido.
Do you have a favorite story or memory from your time as a teacher? I love the memory of teaching in a cart for a whole year. It challenged me in many ways and it surely made me a better teacher. Since I love llamas, I decorated the cart with llama curtains, clipped my posters to the cart, overloaded it with everything I thought I was going to need for the day and made it a whole adventure, driving it in the hallways at all speeds. Fun story, that year, I became the Spanish district lead! I met amazing Spanish teachers and learned so much from that role. I also love seeing my students grow physically and emotionally over the years. Some of my students have been with me for the past five or six years and I love all the memories and stories we have created together. ~~~ Amo el recuerdo de haber enseñado en un carrito por un año completo. Fue un reto que me puso a prueba en muchos aspectos y que sin duda me hizo una mejor maestra. Como me encantan las llamas, decoré el carrito con unas cortinas de llamas, le puse mis carteles y lo equipé con todo lo que podía necesitar haciéndolo todo una aventura y guiándolo por los pasillos a toda velocidad. Ese año curiosamente me convertí en la líder de español a nivel de distrito. Conocí a los mejores maestros de español y aprendí mucho de ese rol. También disfruto de ver a mis estudiantes “mis pollitos” crecer física y emocionalmente a través de los años. Algunos de ellos han sido mis alumnos por los últimos cinco o seis años y hemos creado muchos recuerdos bonitos juntos. What motivates you? For me, teaching is a spiritual gift. It can be hard at times, yet very rewarding and fulfilling. When my students are not afraid of taking risks, or trying new things, when they are being themselves, and showing respect for each other, I know I’ve done something right in creating a safe and positive classroom culture. What motivates me is to ignite a passion in them to learn, to dream big and go after what they love. Their desire to communicate with others in Spanish, travel the world and learn other languages motivates me to prepare better, to give more, to be on my toes and be the best that I can for them. Down the road, I want them to remember the Spanish that they learned, their grammar and vocabulary words; but mostly, I want them to remember how much I loved them and believed in them. ~~~ Para mí, enseñar es un regalo espiritual. Puede ser a veces difícil, sin embargo la recompensa es gigante. Cuando mis estudiantes ya no tienen miedo de aceptar retos, intentar cosas nuevas, cuando sienten que pueden ser ellos mismos y se respetan los unos a los otros, ahí es cuando yo siento que hice algo bien en crear un salón seguro y una cultura positiva.Lo que me motiva es despertar en ellos una pasión por aprender, por soñar en grande y perseguir esos sueños. Su deseo de comunicarse con otras personas en español, viajar el mundo y aprender de otros idiomas, me motiva a prepararme mejor, a dar más de mi y a ser lo mejor que yo pueda ser por ellos. Al final del día, me importa que hayan aprendido el vocabulario y la gramática que les enseñé, pero más me importa que nunca olviden cuánto los quise y cuánto creí en ellos y en su potencial. What are your favorite hobbies outside of work? Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, being surrounded by nature, spending time with my husband, two daughters and our dog, catching up with friends and making jewelry or crafts. ~~~ En mi tiempo libre disfruto viajar, estar rodeada de naturaleza, pasar tiempo con mi esposo, nuestras hijas y perrito, ponerme al día con mis amigos y hacer joyería y artesanías.
