Legacy Traditional Schools, a network of tuition-free public schools, held its annual Regional Great Communicator Speech Contest at its North Valley (Las Vegas) and Avondale campuses. This exclusive oratory competition allows students to research topics, develop skills in effective speech writing, present meaningful ideas, and gain experience in public speaking.

The top two RISE (Recognizing Individual Student Excellence) students from each Legacy campus, competed for top honors in the regional speech contest. This year’s speech topic was “What does our world need more of right now, and how can you and/or your school impact this?”

Student speeches were between three and five minutes and were judged by a panel of guest judges. The speeches were evaluated on content, voice (including projection, fluency, and control), posture, eye contact, and gestures.

“I love public speaking, so to be able to teach students the skills for public speaking is an absolute joy,” said Katie Humpherys, RISE Teacher at Legacy – North Valley. “It was a fun opportunity to host the regional event this year and see how the students from the other Legacy campuses interpreted the prompt. I like positive prompts that engage the students and get them excited about speaking on the topic. This year’s topic was an opportunity for the students to feel like they have a voice and can impact the school.”
