How long have you been a teacher? When did you begin teaching with Legacy?
I became a teacher in August 2001. Previously, I worked in the travel/airline industry since I was in high school and throughout my college years. Today, I can proudly say that I have been working with Legacy since 2022 when it partnered with the School of Excellence in Education.

En agosto de 2001 comencé a trabajar como maestra. Anteriormente, trabajé en la industria de aviación desde que estaba en la secundaria hasta que me gradué de la Universidad. Hoy día, puedo decir con orgullo que llevo trabajando con Legacy desde el 2022 cuando se hicieron socios de la escuela School of Excellence.
What do you love most about being able to help Legacy teachers and families?
At Legacy – Lee Academy, we have a team of teachers and administrators that work as one unit. I love this aspect of my job. Once we receive instruction from our leader, Mrs. Rainey, we tackle it as a team. This is why we are the Wolfpack! We serve parents, guardians, and students with real challenges in their life, from language barriers, to economic needs. However, it is a pleasure to work through these challenges and help our scholars reach their potential.

En Legacy-Lee Academy, contamos con un equipo de maestros y administradores que trabajan muy unido. Esta es la función de mi trabajo que más admiro. Una vez que recibimos instrucciones de nuestra principal, Mrs. Rainey, todos colaboramos en conjunto. Por esta razón somos “The Wolfpack!”. Nosotros servimos a nuestros padres, guardianes, y estudiantes con retos muy duros en sus vidas, desde barreras lingüísticas hasta retos económicos. Sin embargo, es un placer trabajar en medio de estos retos y ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a lograr sus metas.
Do you have a favorite story or memory from your time as a teacher?
I have many stories! I spent four years prior to COVID taking the Spanish 2 class to visit The LBJ Presidential Library and Museum, located in The University of Texas at Austin. We would ride the school bus there, visit the library for 90 minutes, ride the public bus to the Whole Foods located in downtown Austin, dine at the Whole Foods and walk to the Amtrak station, to take a return trip to San Antonio. Every year the students from Spanish 1 worked hard to make sure they would be in Spanish 2, so they could enjoy this trip. The students are looking forward to continuing with this tradition in April 2023.

Tengo varias!! Antes que El Covid llegara a nuestros lares, yo preparé una gira por cuatro años consecutivos para los estudiantes de Espanol 2 a la Biblioteca de LBJ en la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Tomábamos el camión escolar para llegar a nuestro destino, luego visitábamos el museo por 90 minutos, luego tomábamos el camión público para llegar hasta el Whole foods en el centro de la ciudad. Después de pasar tiempo cenando en el Whole Foods caminábamos hasta la oficina de Amtrak para regresar a San Antonio. Anualmente, los estudiantes de Espanol 1 tenían motivos para pasar la clase y poder estar en Espanol 2. Los estudiantes esperan con anticipación que se renueva esta tradición.
What motivates you?
I teach students that successful people are truly happy! My mom once told me that I have the gift of bringing out the good in people. I believed her. Therefore, I teach because it connects young and older minds together, to create beautiful and meaningful moments. This makes me very happy in spite of all the challenges teaching may bring.

Yo les enseño a los estudiantes que las personas exitosas son verdaderamente felices. Desde muy chica, mi mama me dijo que yo tengo el don de ver las buenas cualidades en las personas. Siempre le crei. Por consiguiente, trabajo como profesora porque opino que hacer una conexión de mentes entre los jóvenes y adultos es importante para crear momentos agradables y eternos. Este éxito me hace muy feliz a pesar de los retos que existen dentro de la educación.
What are your favorite hobbies outside of work?
My favorite hobbies are spending time with family, reading one of John Grisham’s novels, or binge-watching chick flicks like The Devil Wears Prada.
